Why You Should Choose Italy for Your Honeymoon
Even Hollywood stars choose Bella Italia when they say, “I do”. Italy is one of the world’s most sought-after destinations for a romantic honeymoon. From North to South, Italy offers endless options to suit the tastes of all newlyweds and create unforgettable memories. There are infinite wonders to be discovered as each new day unfolds and a wealth of history takes you on a dazzling journey into Italy’s glorious past and glamorous present, told through a vast array of cultural events, art and music that bring this magnificent country to life.
The Eternal City is the place to celebrate eternal love.
If Italy is one of the most romantic places in the world to tie the knot and enjoy an unforgettable honeymoon, then Rome is the perfect place to start. In the Eternal City, you can find romance around every corner, from beautiful Piazza del Campidoglio, which was designed by Michelangelo, to watching the sun go down over the Imperial Forums. The Colosseum, Ara Pacis and so many other monuments tell the story of the Roman Empire’s glorious past.
Chiantishire: Picture postcard vistas of rolling hills and vineyards
The rolling hills between Florence and Siena, known to Americans as “Chiantishire”, are renowned around the world. How could you not fall in love with its charming villages nestled amongst the vineyards and breathtaking panoramas that change with the seasons? Here, among the vines, olives and historic villages, time seems to stand still, but it is the many castles of the region that will really make you feel like a Renaissance prince and princess.
Mention of the Renaissance brings to mind nearby Firenze, or Florence. Where could be more suited to love birds than a city famous for its art, good wine and exquisite food?
Sicily by Car
Or would you rather spend your honeymoon exploring a dreamy Mediterranean island? If adventure is your thing then Sicily is your ideal destination! We suggest starting in the island’s capital, Palermo, where you can stroll through narrow lanes and alleys that are home to arts and crafts stalls and street food vendors, before hiring a car to discover the island. There are too many idyllic places to see and exciting things to do for us to list them here, but a few of our favourites are a hike up Mt Etna, which is Europe’s most active volcano, and the cliff-top town of Taormina, which is a must for amateur archaeologists and art lovers, as is Agrigento.
Touring the Marches
The tiny Marches region encapsulates the best of Italy, with the gently rolling hills of Recanati, crystalline seas at Sirolo and Portonovo, the majestic Monti Sibillini, the dazzling ravines and grottos of Frasassi, and the villages of Castelli di Jesi, whose art is on a par with that of Urbino and Ancona. The Marches are the perfect destination for everyone, so why not plan an itinerant honeymoon that takes in all these wonderful places?
Star-studded Honeymoon on Capri
Many moons ago, Capri made a name for itself as a glamorous holiday destination and the island still oozes old-world elegance, making it a luxuriant honeymoon destination. Where better to enjoy an aperitivo in true Dolce Vita style than on the famous Piazzetta? But if you are looking for a quieter slice of paradise and pristine natural wonders, there are plenty of less populous places to be found. On Capri, as on Ischia and Procida, the vistas are truly unforgettable, particularly in the off-season. Movie stars from all over the world love Capri for its romantic walkways overlooking the sparkling blue sea, and the Farglioni rock formations that rise from the water not far offshore, which are a well-known symbol of the island.
Relaxing Alpine Vistas
The Alps constitute the natural border between Italy and its Northern neighbours and are some of the highest mountains in Europe. If you are a fan of the mountain life, the Bagni di Bormio (in the province of Sondrio) is a little known but increasingly popular destination, where you can soak up the beauty of the majestic landscape without forfeiting that touch of class that is essential in a honeymoon destination. Skiers might consider a winter honeymoon on skis in one of the region’s many resorts, with romantic après-ski moments by a crackling fire.
